An Aerial Story of Burdekin Wetlands
By Shaz Spannenburg and Polly Fenton
📍Mulgrave Gallery - Lawn
Local artists Shaz Spannenburg and Polly Fenton, bring a fresh perspective to the Burdekin Wetlands, capturing its beauty from above. Drawn to abstract patterns and natural textures, they scout locations, then take to the skies.
Presented as a projection, this exhibition showcases these wetlands in the wake of an intense wet season – a landscape in recovery, alive with regrowth, birdlife, and wildlife. From above, the wetlands reveal their hidden geometry: Salt-streaked floodplains, fractal textures, and abstract patterns left by receding waters.
These wetlands are culturally significant and cared for by the Gudjuda Land and Sea Rangers, whose dedication helps protect the health of Country and its ecosystems. We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Bindal region and thank elder Eddie Smallwood for his voiceover contribution.
This 15-minute moving picture projection that showcases a beautiful, unique perspective of country from on high, and a celebration of North Queensland's diverse and beautiful landscape will captivate and fascinate. A beautiful moment for those who love nature, photography, and a quieter festival space to enjoy.
This projection will be followed by a series of short animations, Pama Voices, from Pama Language School.

Pama Voices
Cape York Peninsula is among the most linguistically diverse regions in the world. The Pama Language Centre collaborates with linguists, First Nations experts, and creatives to revive the ancestral languages of Cape York Peninsula. Using short films with animation, puppetry, and song, we teach languages like Mpakwithi, Injinoo Ikya, Wik Mungkan, and Guugu Yimithirr.
These films explore traditional stories, personal and collective anecdotes, dance, history, memories, and contemporary tales. The team includes technologists, sound engineers, dancers, educators, actors, and filmmakers, ensuring cultural preservation through diverse approaches. These films are vital for keeping Cape York’s languages alive and celebrating their rich heritage through storytelling and collaboration.
This projection will alternate with An Aerial Story of Burdekin Wetlands by Shaz Spannenburg.
